Background of the Study

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) represent a significant public health challenge, with long-term consequences for both individuals and communities. Nurse-led interventions, such as education, counseling, and screening, have been shown to be effective in preventing STIs, especially in high-risk populations (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2023). Nurses are uniquely positioned to provide critical care and health education to prevent the spread of STIs.

At Federal Medical Centre, Gombe, nurse-led interventions are central to the hospital's strategy for STI prevention. Despite these efforts, challenges such as stigma, lack of awareness, and limited access to care may hinder the effectiveness of these interventions. This study assesses the effectiveness of nurse-led interventions in preventing STIs, exploring the outcomes and identifying areas for improvement.

Statement of the Problem

Although nurse-led interventions play a significant role in STI prevention at Federal Medical Centre, Gombe, the effectiveness of these interventions remains unclear. Factors such as inadequate training, community stigma, and resource limitations may undermine the success of these initiatives. Understanding the impact of nurse-led interventions is essential for improving STI prevention strategies.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the effectiveness of nurse-led interventions in preventing sexually transmitted infections at Federal Medical Centre, Gombe.

2. To identify factors that affect the success of these interventions.

3. To recommend strategies for improving nurse-led STI prevention efforts.

Research Questions

1. How effective are nurse-led interventions in preventing sexually transmitted infections at Federal Medical Centre, Gombe?

2. What factors influence the success of these interventions?

3. What strategies can enhance the effectiveness of nurse-led STI prevention efforts?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurse-led interventions significantly reduce the incidence of sexually transmitted infections.

2. Factors such as stigma, knowledge gaps, and resource constraints impact the effectiveness of nurse-led interventions.

3. Targeted strategies can improve the effectiveness of nurse-led STI prevention programs.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on nurse-led interventions aimed at preventing STIs at Federal Medical Centre, Gombe. It excludes other healthcare providers and interventions outside the scope of nurse-led initiatives. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data and challenges in measuring long-term outcomes.

Definitions of Terms

• Nurse-Led Interventions: Health promotion activities, education, and counseling provided by nurses to prevent health issues such as STIs.

• Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Infections transmitted through sexual contact, including HIV/AIDS, chlamydia, and gonorrhea.

• Effectiveness: The degree to which nurse-led interventions reduce the incidence of STIs and improve prevention outcomes.
